What's new?

Hi Children's and Teen Librarians,

Several new movies are coming up in the Fall that are from Teen and Kids books. I'll be ordering more copies of the books for the library so those movie goers will have enough copies to read after they've seen the movie.

Some of the movies are ;

Where the Wild Things Are

Tin Tin

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs

Fantastic Mr. Fox

Cirque du Freak

The Lovely Bones (not a Teen title but I think it has a lot of teen readers)

Precious - based on the novel Push

Also in movie news, there is a new movie coming out in October called 'Whip It' produced by Drew Barrymore and starring Ellen Page that's from a teen book and looks like a fun movie,

I am ordering lots of copies of the book and when the movie hits DVD I'll order that too.

Thank you to the Green Valley Friends group who generously gave thousands of dollars to our materials budget this year! I had a great time spending that money.
Thank you!

Mid August

AUGUST
Children's news:
There is a new Amelia Bedelia book out called 'Amelia Bedelia's First Day of School' by Herman Parish and Lynne Avril.
Herman Parish is a nephew of Peggy Parish. This is a Picture book rather than a reader and gives us a look at Amelia when she is a kid in first grade so I think it will be a fun story.
I ordered lots of copies for the library.
You should be seeing new picture books about Halloween arriving soon too, and other holiday books soon.
Teen News:
The publishers are really jumping on the 'Twilight' books popularity and coming out with more vampire stories and other spin-offs.
I just ordered copies of 'Wuthering Heights' from Harper Teen and the cover has a beautiful rose
image on it, plus a medallion on the cover that says,
'Bella & Edward's Favorite Book'. So maybe a lot of Bella and Edward fans will come to the library and want to read 'Wuthering Heights' ?
I tried to copy and paste the image but I guess it is copyrighted so I couldn't do it.
Music CDs:
I ordered a batch of music CDs that I think teens will like if they're not already getting the music from iTunes or somewhere else. These artists were some I pulled from the recent Billboard charts.
These CDs include:
Sugarland Enjoy the Ride
Sugarland Love on the Inside
Paramore The Final Riot
Kanye West Late registration
Black Eyed Peas Bridging the Gap
More news later,
Ann

News in August

Hi Children's librarians
I've been ordering many new books lately and some older titles from the reading lists you have been sending my way. Thank you for those lists, they help me keep in touch with what kids are asking for when they are preparing for school.
I've been ordering Halloween children's books this week that should be here before Halloween and today I am seeing Christmas and Hanukkah titles in the B & T carts.
I'm Not Santa and Corduroy's Hanukkah are two new board books that I will be ordering this week.
I'm Not Santa is by one of my favorite author/illustrators, Jonathan Allen who wrote I'm Not Cute.

More news to come...

JULY news

July News
Hi fellow YA librarians,
I hope you are surviving the heat. Thank goodness the monsoons have officially begun!
I want to let you know that ordering new materials doesn't happen right away on July 1st even though the new budget year has begun.
Libby Jones has to go through the fiscal closing and make sure all of the accounts are paid off from last year. Once that is all cleaned up, then we get to order again.
I know there are long waiting lists on some titles and I have more copies on order to help with that.
I'm looking over the profiles and reading lists that you have all sent me to add new items to the collection and beef up our collection.
Right now I'm working on a Baker $ Taylor DVD cart of how to play drums, guitar, bass and keyboards for teens.
My favorite title so far here is 'The Zen of Screaming '
"It was only through a long process of figuring out how to really deliver those raw, heartfelt rock vocals without holding anything back - and without damaging her voice - that Melissa Cross discovered the technique that she teaches her students today"
From Melissa's web site.
Stay cool,
Ann

June Updates

June News from CDO
The CDO staff went to Toxic Ranch records and the 17th Street Market this week to meet the owners & managers there and talk about future buying at these stores. Both look like they will be great sources for local music.
17th Street has a lot of the more traditional music, folk, Latin, Lisa Otey & that kind of stuff.
Toxic Ranch is a little more alternative ? more ... young?? If you are near Fourth Avenue or downtown you'll have to visit there yourselves and give me your impressions.
So if Baker & Taylor doesn't carry music by local groups or bands or singers, the CDO dept. can try to get it through one of these two stores. I have already asked Toxic Ranch to try and get copies of CDs from the local teen bands who are going to play in the 'Rock a Book' concert.
July is the new budget year! Hooray! We can start ordering again!

Towards the end of May I ordered lots of DVDs. If you haven't seen these yet, they will be arriving soon at your branch -

  • Go Diego Go: Great Gorilla
  • The Jetsons
  • Ballet Shoes
  • Saturday Morning Carttons
and for teens:
  • The O.C.
  • Seventh Heaven
  • My So Called Life
  • 7th Heaven
  • Smallville

Enjoy the summer,

Ann

Assigned reading/classice

Assigned Reading in Schools or Classics
Please be on the look out for assigned reading lists and classic book lists that students might be bringing in before school ends this Spring.
I'd like to order more Classics for the library, especially those titles that teens need for school.
Send me copies of any book lists you see that teens are bringing into the library and I'll try and order more copies of those books.
Thanks very much!

Magazines

Magazines
Now is a good time to think about which magazines you would like your branch to subscribe to for the Fiscal Year 2009/10.
Look at the magazines your branch gets now for kids and teens and see how much use they are getting. Are some tattered and kind of beat up? Those are probably the most popular. Are some collecting dust and don't look as if anyone has disturbed them in months? Those are titles that maybe are not as popular any more.
When you have a chance look at what is being sold at your local grocery store, or book store in the kids section.
We deal with Ebsco for periodicals and they carry almost any magazine that you see on newsstands.
Have fun!

February Teen DVD orders:

League of Their Own with Tom Hanks & Geena Davis

Many of these titles are on back order in the Baker & Taylor warehouse because of the demand across the country so they will come as they are available.
