December 16 News

Good News!

The library is now able to order materials from two local bookstores, Antigone and Singing Wind.

This is Winn Bundy, the owner of the Singing Wind book store who is a font of knowledge about local authors and books.

And here is the link to Antigone Books close by on 4th Avenue. This is a fun book store with lots of helpful staff and lots of choices.

If Baker & Taylor does not carry a new title and CDO wants to purchase it, we can now try these two vendors.

December news items

Children's news:
I have ordered the book by Dr. Milton Lipson, 'Two Arizona Black Birds' from Changing Hands book store so we should see it available in the catalog pretty soon.
'In "Two Arizona Black Birds" (Wheatmark, $16), Lipson 's enduring stories have been preserved in print to reach a wider audience. But the goal is the same: to amuse, entertain and teach. In this case, it urges people to cultivate their capabilities as they accept their limitations. The black birds in his story are both residents of Arizona's Sonoran Desert. One is the handsome, shiny black phainopepla. The other is a starling whose small, black-feathered body has enough white feathers scattered throughout to make it look almost polka-dotted. They both love to eat seeds, grain and berries, but their absolute favorite food is bugs. How they catch them (or don't) is the focus of Lipson 's story'.
Arizona Daily Star Nov. 13, 2008
Dr. Lipson died last year and was local writer Marilyn Heins' husband.

Recent DVD orders include:
Hannah Montana: The Complete First Season
Max & Ruby - A Very Merry Christmas
Prince Caspian
Beethoven's Big Break (the dog)

Children's book notes

Have you seen this picture book yet?
The Black Book of Colors By Menena Cottin Illustrated by Rosana Faría

"It is very hard for a sighted person to imagine what it is like to be blind. This groundbreaking, award-winning book endeavors to convey the experience of a person who can only see through his or her sense of touch, taste, smell or hearing. Raised black line drawings on black paper, which can be deciphered by touch, complement a beautifully written text describing colors through imagery. Braille letters accompany the text so that the sighted reader can begin to imagine what it is like to use Braille to read."

It was recently named one of Booklist magazine's Top Ten Art books as well as a number of other awards.

Third Week in November

November News updates

Children's News:

Now would be a great time to take your December Holiday books, DVDs, CDs and audio books out of storage and put them out there for patrons to check out. I think they will go quickly!

Speaking of Holiday books, I'm seeing Valentine's and Easter board books in a cart sent to me from Baker & Taylor. The publishing dates are December 2008 and January 2009.
I ordered a lot yesterday for the library so we should see those before the January and February holidays.

A few of the titles are: Somebunny Loves You by Jane Gerver
Puppy Love by Salina Yoon
In Elmo's Easter Parade by Naomi Kleinberg
Little Quack's Bedtime by Lauren Thompson

Teen News:

Graphic Novels

There are some really wonderful Teen graphic novels now in the collection that aren't exactly novels but they are written in a graphic novel style.

Japan Ai: A Tall Girl's Adventures in Japan by Aimee Major Steinberger 952.05 st349 2007 is one example. It's a 'manga journal that is both adorable and breathtaking!' (from the back cover)

The fatal bullet : a true account of the assassination, lingering pain, death, and burial of James A. Garfield, twentieth president of the United States... by Rick Geary 364.1523 G262 is another example. In fact Rick Geary has created a number of true crime graphic novels that are excellent.

Houdini: The Handcuff King by Jason Lutes & Nick Bertozzi 92 H813l is another example.
So if you are looking for some good graphic novels to read or recommend and want to branch out a little, try some of these titles.

Author News:

Jeannette Eyerly the YA author died Aug. 18, 2008 at one hundred years of age.
She was one of the first YA writers to deal with topics like abortion and teen pregnancy.
I checked and all of her books are currently out of print.

Lenore Blegvad, the children's book author died Sept. 5, 2008 at the age of 83. She wrote; First friends illustrated by her husband Eric Blegvad, and
Kitty and Mr. Kipling : neighbors in Vermont
plus more. I'll see if any of her older books are still in print and order those if I am able.
More news later,

Ann

More Children's news

Children's news :

The movie 'Beauty and the Beast' is not available to purchase now. Baker & Taylor does not have it and Disney is not selling it right now. I believe it is 'in the vault'.

I see that there are 55 holds on the one remaining copy and that is unfortunate but we can't really do anything about that until Disney decides to release the movie again.

Meanwhile maybe you can encourage the little patrons to reserve 'Kung Fu Panda' or 'Space Chimps' or 'Wall-e'?

'Kung Fu Panda' only has 4 holds today and 'Space Chimps' has just one hold as of today.

Teen News:

Yesterday I sent in an order for 50 copies of the book, 'Robert Pattinson: Eternally Yours' a non-fiction book about the lead actor in the movie 'Twilight'.
There are eight pages of photos in this book!

Third week in October

What's new at CDO?
Children's - I'm seeing a lot of Holiday titles in the Baker & Taylor carts so I'm ordering lots of these for the system. They are mostly Picture books and Board books, and mostly Christmas themed with some Hanukkah and Kwanzaa stories too.
These should arrive before the holidays since I'm ordering them quite early.

Did you like the book, 'Love that Dog'?
Sharon Creech has a new novel out called, 'Hate That Cat'.
School Library Journal says " Once again, all of the poems are addressed to Miss Stretchberry, and Jack's growing excitement as he discovers the delights of sound ("Tintinnabulation! ") and expression is palpable.

Teens - This week I ordered lots of copies of the movie ' The Incredible Hulk'. We'll see how it compares to the Lou Ferrigno TV version (1978-1982).

CosmoGirl magazine ceases publication in December 2008. If your branch receives CosmoGirl, you will see a substitute magazine to fill out the rest of the subscription. I'm not sure what that substitute magazine will be yet.
It seems as if print media is having a challenging time lately making a profit so we may see other magazines also struggling in the future.

More later,
Ann

'A lump of coal that wants to be an artist, but would settle for making decorative marks on a piece of grilled meat, rolls out of a forgotten bag of charcoal one winter and takes a spin through town seeking a miracle.' is the annotation from the publisher. I ordered 47 copies for the library.
Teen news:
I have recently ordered many copies of these DVDs:
The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor with Brendan Fraser
The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2, with America Ferrera
Time Bandits with Terry Gilliam and John Cleese
New CDs:
Identified by Vanessa Hudgens

That's all for now,

Books & Movies

There are some new movies coming out this Fall that are based on Children's and Teen books.
I recently saw previews for Twilight, City of Ember, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, and The Tale of Despereaux. I want to see all of them and read the books too of course.
When the preview for Twilight came up on the screen, the teens in the theater all gasped or screamed they were so excited !
http://www.twilightthemovie.com/ is the link to the movie's official web site if you want to take a look.
I'm hoping lots of movie watchers will come to the library and check out all of these books because they loved the movies so much.
And, we'll order the movies once they are realeased onto DVD.
Movies and book tie-ins might make an attractive display somewhere in your library if you have the space?

'Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist ' is a new movie opening up and there's a great interview with the authors on NPR today, October 3rd. The book is written by Rachel Cohn & David Levithan.
