November News

Happy November !!!
I think I'm finished ordering new materials for the remodeled Wilmot branch. That was fun and the whole system will benefit from the added Children's DVD's, picture books, biographies, readers and fiction that Wilmot receives once they are open.
Right now those materials are in warehouses in Nevada and will be trucked on down to Tucson in early 2011 when it gets closer to the actual opening of the remodeled Wilmot.
I have heard that there is an infomercial or ad on TV now advertising a DVD set called, 'Your Baby Can Read' that comes with flash cards.
I will not be ordering this DVD set because of the recent studies showing that it is not beneficial for babies to be watching DVDs or television, also it is not handled by our vendor, Baker & Taylor and it is pretty costly ($199.95) per set.
If any of you would like to update your branch profile I am happy to use your updated version. Thank you,
Ann

Mid August

More money for Wilmot remodeled collection!
I get to order $50,000 worth of new Children's DVDs for the remodeled Wilmot branch collection. This will be lots of fun!
I've just got to remember to add on the $8 in processing fees for each DVD I order. But still it's a lot of money, hooray.
See you at the next meeting,
Ann

JULY !

Hooray for July!
I just ordered the movie 'Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Cradle of Life' with Angelina Jolie. It's a sequel to the original Lara Croft movie which is not currently available to buy.
B & T's database says, 'Final Sale - Stock Limited to On Hand/NO Returns are allowed.'
Oh well, we'll have to live with the sequel for now.
I also ordered 'Man vs. Wild 'Seasons 1,2,3 & 4 and
'The Mentalist' Seasons 1 & 2 A teen had suggested that we get these.
And for children I ordered 'Tooth Fairy' because we kept seeing suggestions for it and
'Potty Power' and 'Go Potty Go!' on DVD for all of those families dealing with potty training.
Stay cool,
Ann

Clive Cussler

Clive Cussler has a new children's book out...The Adventures of Hotsy Totsy
And here's my favorite line from a reviewer ,
'suffers from all the same problems: stilted prose, gender stereotypes, unrealistic dialogue, deus-ex-magicus solutions to every problem. Both read as if written by someone who closed the cover on their last children's book in 1940. A publishing event that demands an apology to the industry, all children and the trees that gave their lives.'
Kirkus April 2010
I am ordering a few copies anyway just because it's a Clive Cussler book and I figure people will be asking for it.

May News:
This week I've been ordering new Teen paperbacks for Wilmot's remodeled branch. It was a lot of fun! I saw authors listed that hadn't been in the forefront of my review reading lately.

Ewww, I just heard that Tyra Banks has signed a book deal for some new model stories for teens. Ick.

Happy Tuesday!

Last week of April

I've been busy ordering lots of children's books for the newly remodeled Wilmot branch once it opens. They will have a great new collection of Picture books, Readers and Fiction.
Right now I have 50 carts of 100 titles each of J Fiction to look through and 20 carts of Teen Fiction to look at . It's fun to be shopping for all of these new books.

Beverly Cleary- She is 94 years old! She wishes the new movie, 'Beezus and Ramona' could have been called, 'Ramona Quimby' or Ramona Q' because it's about a little girl, but the movie producers want it to appeal to the teen audience as well so some changes were made in the story.
Beezus is older in the movie than she is in the film and is even kissing a guy.
We'll see how the box office returns go.

Susan Lowell - I was able to see her at the Main library this week reading 'Three Little Javelinas.'
It was cool to hear her read her own story. I had forgotten how great the art work is so it was neat to see the book pages projected on a big screen in the Children's meeting room.
An elementary school class was there too and enjoyed the presentation I think. They were very well behaved, but did join in on the huffing and puffing part of the story.

See you soon,
Ann

New Children's DVDs

Just ordered more copies of the movie, 'Open Season'. I had originally ordered 28 copies in 2007 and now we are down to one copy left in the system. So three years to lose 27 copies, whew.
Also ordered 'Fantastic Mr. Fox' for the library. Roald Dahl rules!
More later,
Ann

Rabbits

Rabbits are coming!

Jeremy Jackrabbit and his friends, Lizard Lorraine, Roadrunner Raul, and Ramona the mouse are coming your way...

I went to the City Council offices yesterday afternoon and Rodney Glassman's office staff gave me several boxes of the book, 'Jeremy Jackrabbit Harvests the Rain' by Rodney and Sasha Glassman.
This is a sweet little story and the art work is done by local student artists who are all listed in the back of the book. There is also a special thanks to Nancy Ledeboer and Sara Dias in the book's dedication.
There should be enough copies for all branches, so enjoy!

CDO update March 25, 2010

More March news
I've been working on ordering Readers and Picture books for the newly remodeled Wilmot branch collection which is re-opening in about a year.
CDO is not planning to replace Wilmot's entire collection, but we are working on refreshing parts of the collection. As the Children's and Teen selector, I am going to be working on refreshing the Teen collection, Children's Fiction, Picture books, readers and paperbacks.
Adult selectors will refresh the Adult Fiction, Mystery, Science Fiction, Fantasy, Romance, Westerns, and Large Print collections.
So far I've completed 20 carts of Readers that Baker & Taylor sent me last week. Each cart had 100 Reader titles in it so I've looked at thousands of Reader titles recently !
My next job is looking at the 34 carts full of Picture book titles. Each cart has 100 Picture book titles in it. This will probably take a while, it's fun though.
Happy Thursday,
Ann

March 19th news

Happy March!

I just sent off an order for Twilight: the Graphic Novel as an Express book. There is a waiting list on it so I think it will be popular as an Express choice too. That's for teens.

And, for children I ordered Battle of the Labyrinth by Rick Riordan. There are 80 holds on this book so maybe the Express copies will help ease up the waiting list. We also own this book on CD and as Audio download from Overdrive.

Thinking ahead to April - that's when the Standing Order list usually goes out to your branch manager for review and decision making. The standing order list includes items like the Guinness World Records 032.02 G9485 2010 (I always thought it was called The Guinness Book of World Records ) travel books, Cracking the GED, and magazines.

I encourage all of you to take a look at your local grocery store and/or drug store newstand to see what new magazines are available for teens and kids.
Have you heard any teen suggestions for magazines?
Does your branch have a book club or advisory group that would like to recommend any new magazines for your branch?
Don't forget the ever popular Fangoria magazine - all about horror films. I think teenagers really like horror and even if the cover art is fairly grotesque... 'Fangoria has a 30 year legacy of providing the best in horror entertainment and news coverage. ' from their website.
Have fun !

March Updates

March News
Ye Toads and Vipers !
I just read an Advanced Reader's copy of the new title by Karen Cushman, 'Alchemy and Meggy Swann'.
It's due to be published in April and I have already placed an order in with Baker & Taylor for copies for the library.
Meggy is the alchemist's daughter and not happy to be in London living with her father. . It's a good historical fiction story and I think kids will enjoy it.
The publisher indicates that it's geared toward the 10 to 14 year old reader. 176 pages.
Teen News:
I recently ordered 'Twilight in Forks: The Saga of the Real Town' on DVD. It's a documentary about the town of Forks and I figured this would be popular for all of the Twilight fans.
More DVDs ordered from ALA's Best DVD list:
Gridiron Gang
Drive Me Crazy
Planet B-Boy
Rising Son: The legend of Skateboarder Christian Hosoia
New music CDs: 'Word of Mouf' by Ludacris
' The Red Light' Ludacris
' Under Great White Northern Lights' by White Stripes
'Who I Am' Nick Jonas
